Mitsubishi Motors Corp announced July 6, 2011, that it made improvements to the "i-MiEV" electric vehicle (EV) and will release it in two models, which are the low-priced "M" type and the high-grade "G" type.
In Japan, the M type will be available for a subsidized price of ¥1.88 million (approx US$23,133) while its official price is ¥2.6 million. The subsidized price of the existing i-MiEV is ¥2.98 million.
The M type will be released July 25, 2011, in Japan. Mitsubishi Motors expects to sell 3,000 units of the M type and 3,000 units of the G type in fiscal 2011.
M type
Mitsubishi Motors realized the low price by reducing the capacity of the lithium-ion (Li-ion) rechargeable battery by about 35% from 16kWh to 10.5kWh. As battery cells, the company employed Toshiba Corp's "SCiB."
Despite the 35% smaller battery capacity, the drive range was reduced only by 25% from 160km to 120km under the JC08 test mode. This was realized by adding a function to charge the battery with the energy regenerated by the motor when the brake pedal is pressed down. In the case of the existing i-MiEV, the regeneration function works when the acceleration pedal is released, and only the friction brake works together with the brake panel.
The maximum torque of the M type's motor is 180N·m, which is the same as that of the existing i-MiEV's motor, but the maximum output was lowered from 47kW to 30kW.
G type
The G type is scheduled to be released in mid-August 2011 at a price of ¥3.8 million. Its subsidized price will be ¥2.84 million.
The capacity of its Li-ion rechargeable battery is 16kWh, which is the same as that of the existing i-MiEV's battery. And its battery cells are manufactured by Lithium Energy Japan Co Ltd.
Its drive range is 180km, which was increased from 160km by adding the aforementioned regeneration function, under the JC08 test mode.
Furthermore, the G type comes with a dedicated remote control having a communication function. And it enables to remotely set a charging time and to operate an air conditioner without entering the vehicle. In the case of the M type, the remote is available as an option.
